What's CANE/RUSH ?

CANE

Cane is harvested form a Rattan palm. Mostly found in  Asia, India and West Africa. The stem of the rattan tree is used to produce cane. Pulled from the palm it comes in varies length and thickness. Once harvest it is preceded in a factories where it passes through a machine which strips the peel and reviles the pith. The peel thane is cut into cane strips.

 

FIBER / NATURAL RUSH

Fiber rush is durable paper, twisted into a rope resembling the natural rush coil. Natural Rush, which comes from the cattails leave, is very difficult to use and requires skill.  Fiber rush is mostly used today, and comes in variety of thickness.

 

 

WICKER

Wicker is the Inner core of the Rattan palm. Rattan core is been used for centuries for furniture and basket weaving. It is durable and excellent for porch furniture's and used highly in the Victorian era. Still to this day wicker is a popular outside furniture.

 

 

SPLINT/FLAT REED/BINDER CANE

Splint seat can be woven with binder cane, flat reed, oak, hickory or ash.  Flat or oval reed is mostly used for the chairs and comes from the inner core of the rattan Palm.  Binder Cane comes from the bark of the palm and can be used for seat weaving.
